n/a
Image Size: 8" x 6" Border: 10.25" x 8.5"
Originally created in the mid to late nineteenth century, this 1891 reproduction is a high quality original poster book print in excellent condition, perfectly suitable for framing. It is not a photocopy.
The image measures 8" x 6" with a border measuring 10.25" x 8.5" overall.
Untrimmed with room for trimming border. The backside of the print is blank.
1891 Commentary at bottom reads:
COLOSSEUM, ROME, ITALY.--The Colosseum, originally called the Amphitheatrum Flavium and completed by Titus in 80 A.D., was the largest theatre and one of the most imposing structures in the world. It was inaugurated by 100 days' gladiatorial combats, in which 5000 wild animals were killed. It contained seats for 87,000 spectators. Only one-third of the gigantic structure now remains, yet the ruins are still stupendously impressive. The Colosseum has ever been a symbol of the greatness of Rome, and gave rise in the eighth century to a prophetic saying of the pilgrims: "While stands the Colosseum, Rome shall stand; when falls the Colosseum, Rome shall fall; and when Rome falls, with it shall fall the world!"

This original 1891 print was taken from a rare antique book containing the largest and most unique collection of black and white photographs ever to be made before it's printing. It is one of many photographic views of famous places around the world and instantaneous photographs showing the every day life of people in various countries of the world in the nineteenth century. The collection, which was available by subscription only, also features direct copies of famous paintings and statuary from the leading galleries of the world, by the old and modern masters. At the bottom edge is a short commentary containing interesting facts about the place. You can trim the border and frame this image for a nostalgic gift or to add to your decor. This is not a copy of a copy, nor is it a modern or recent reproduction.
The condition is good. I am fairly selective about the prints I sell. With these prints being over 115 years old, you can expect to see at least some wear along the edges, which can easily be trimmed.

I offer some prints with frames but prefer sending unframed prints because the glass in frames is too easily broken in transit. Also, proper packaging for glass frames is a costly expense for the customer. Instead, you can find great deals on frames at your local department store where you can often find a variety of colors and styles from $3 and up. Add style and character to your home or office with famous masterpieces without spending a fortune. My prints are as aesthetically appealing and pleasing to the eye as rare original prints.
Much more in my ebay store! Hundreds of famous masterpieces by various artists!
