Octavo [size: 120 x 185 mm]. Pagination: [2, blank], vi, 374, [4, adverts, dated November 1872]. With 7 heliotype photographic plates by Rejlander, including 3 folding, and 21 wood-engravings in text. Bound in original green cloth, with blindstamp rules to sides, spine gilt, drab brown endpapers with ticket of Edmonds & Remnant.
CONDITION: Binding slightly rubbed at joints and corners, slightly minor wear at lower corners, very small nicks to head and foot of spine, light cracks at inner joints, minor light foxing to plate versos where folded and facing leaves, but otherwise clean throughout; minimal shaking of gathering, a clean tight copy throughout with an old heraldic bookplate on the front paste down.
FIRST EDITION, PROBABLE FIRST ISSUE, INSCRIBED ON BLANK LEAF BEFORE TITLE 'FROM THE AUTHOR'. Copies of Darwin's works, so-inscribed, were not in fact inscribed in Darwin's own hand, but rather that of a secretary in the publisher's office, who would have sent out presentation copies according to a list supplied by the author; such copies are, however, very collectable and desirable.
The issue points of this book are complex, and although we believe this to be a first issue, there are also copies of mixed issue which prevent us being definite upon this point. The following points are notes in this copy: 1. Blank leaf before the title page. 2. 'that' is correctly spelled on page 208, line 1. 3. Plates numbered in Roman rather than Arabic numerals.
Overall a very good presentation copy of this important Darwin title.
