Mother Goose
The Old Nursery Rhymes
Illustrated
[and with a Foreward]
by
Arthur Rackham
Limited
US Edition on British Hand Made Pure Rag Paper
1
of 150 Large Paper copies
Signed by the Artist
(but
worn)
New York:
The Century Co.
n.d. [ 1913 ]
This is the Limited US
Edition, Number 100 of 150 copies for sale in America (in addition to
1130 copies for Great Britain, Ireland, and Colonies) of Mother Goose: The Old
Nursery Rhymes
with
illustrations by the incomparable Arthur
Rackham identical to the UK Limited Edition as described by Riall p.
115-116 and Latimore & Haskell p.
40-41
(Rackham bibliographies) except for the changes to the title page and
binding to show the US publisher's details instead of the details of
the UK publisher and to the limitation statement. This deluxe US
edition is not described in
Riall, Latimore & Haskell, nor Greer's Addenda to Riall.
Interestingly,
Rackham's fame apparently had risen so much that for
this de luxe edition, the British handmade pure rag paper has a special
watermark with Rackham's initials and a bird vignette (in addition to a
Heinemann windmill logo watermark).
A bit of an oddity in terms of Rackham's books the Limited UK and US
editions are much larger than the first UK trade edition (about twice
the size) and all these
editions are considerably different from the US trade edition which is
entirely re-set and re-arranged and has the largest color plates
(larger even than those in the limited editions but not as well
printed) but does not contain all the black and white vignettes.
Oddly too, Rackham did at least three different sampler designs and
none are used in this limited edition (instead they're found on the
covers of the first UK trade edition, a later UK trade edition, and as
a title page in the US trade edition). Riall, in A New Bibliography of Arthur Rackham, notes that the US trade edition includes a color plate pastedown on
the
cover
not
found in the UK editions - this is incorrect as the plate is found in the UK editions (although reduced in size and with a different continuation of
the sky design in place of the lettering on the US trade edition's
cover). Riall
also
notes that "The American [trade] edition is far more desirable, as the
above additions, with the quality paper, produces a far better
publication." Whether one agrees or not, it seems that one must
obtain at least four editions (a Limited Edition, the First US Trade
Edition, the First UK Trade Edition, and the Early UK Trade Edition
with a different sampler design to the cover) to collect all the
published artwork by Rackham in all its various forms.
Rackham's Foreword notes:
"There are many more Nursery Rhymes than those in
this book, but these are the ones I like best, and I think most of the
best known are among them. They are those I loved in my own
nursery days, and I have chosen the forms I knew then. I think
one may do so, as nursery rhymes have, until recently, been handed on
only by oral tradition, with its inevitable variations. At home
we never had any complete book of them ; most we knew came direct
from our elders. The children of the present day have often
several printed versions of the same rhyme to choose from, but they do
not seem to be confused by them. They make their own selection
and go on inventing new variations. And however much they alter
and add to our friend, Mother Goose's original collection, they still
use her name."
This book includes: A frog he would a-wooing go; Baa, baa,
black sheep; Daffy-Down-Dilly has come up to town; Early to
bed, and early to rise; Fiddle-de-dee, fiddle-de-dee;
Georgie, Porgie, pudding and pie; Goosey, goosey, gander;
Hey! diddle-diddle; Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall;
Hush-a-bye,
baby, on the tree top; I saw three ships come sailing by;
Jack and Jill went up the hill; Little Bo-Peep has lost her
sheep; Little Miss Muffett; London bridge is broken down;
Mary, Mary, Quite contrary; Old Mother Hubbard; One, two,
Buckle my shoe; Pat-a-cake, pat-a-cake, baker's man!; Peter
Piper picked a peck of picked pepper; Rub-a-dub-dub Three men in
a tub; Sing a
song of sixpence; Simple Simon met a pieman; The Queen of
Hearts, She made some tarts; There was an old woman tossed up in
a basket; This

Robin?; and many, many more.
Illustrated with 13
tipped-in color plates (including the frontispiece) and 1 tipped-in
black and white plate (all mounted on heavy brown paper and covered by
descriptive tissue guards), a
pictorial title page in black and white, about 80 black and white
illustrations (including many silhouettes and a few
illustrations/vignettes incorporating
self-portraits), and many small vignettes and pictorial letters (some
repeated). In addition the paper used for this
deluxe edition is watermarked with
Rackham's initials and a bird vignette.
Arthur Rackham
(1867-1939) was born in Lewisham and studied art at the Lambeth
School. He is often described as one of the triumvirate of finest
Edwardian illustrators, alongside Edmund Dulac and Kay Nielsen, and for
good reason. Both his paintings and drawings show his amazing
skill as an artist and his keen understanding of human nature.
His fantasy work is both beautiful and quite often rather frightening,
with even his trees and plants showing a sinister side - just the scare
that a child (and an adult) enjoys! He was elected an Associate of the
Royal Society of Painters in Water-colours in 1902 and then a full
member in 1908, and vice-president in 1910. His Rip Van Winkle, along with Dulac's Arabian Nights, were two of the
earliest and best-known books to receive the new lavish Edwardian
gift-book treatment - being released in both a de luxe edition and a,
still rather deluxe, trade edition - both in large formats often with
elaborate gilt bindings, tipped-in color plates with tissue guards,
etc. Many of his books from that point onward became extremely
popular such as Peter Pan, Grimm's Fairy Tales, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland,
his Wagner's Ring books, and
his Shakespeare books. Some of his books even received the
luxury treatment in editions in French, Italian, Norwegian, Spanish
(and Catalan), and Swedish. Many of his books have also been
continually printed through the years - a testament to his
artistry. In addition to his book illustration work, he produced
a vast quantity of illustrations for periodicals like Cassell's Magazine, Little Folks, The Pall Mall Budget, St. Nicholas, The Westminster Budget, and many,
many more. He was influenced by Ricketts, Cruikshank, Beardsley,
the Art Nouveau movement, and the artists of Germany. He was
awarded Gold Medals at Milan
(1906), Barcelona (1912), and Paris (1912). His amazing work
continues to influence artists and dreamers today.
Medium quarto - about 11.5" x 9" (29,5cm x 23cm). 160pp., including an Index
of First Lines, (plus plates, not included in pagination). Printed in
England on British hand made pure rag paper (watermarked with both the
William Heinemann windmill logo and an AR and bird logo) by R. Clay and
Sons, Ltd., Brunswick Street, S.E., and Bungay, Suffolk.

original cream cloth binding with gilt
lettering and a gilt vignette to the upper board, and with remains of
the gilt lettering and vignettes to the spine.
Plain cream endpapers. TEG - Top

Book Store, Inc., Boston, Mass.) and diagonal crease to front free
endpaper, protruding page edges browned with denting and short tears,
half-title page and last page of Index to First Lines at rear tanned
and foxed, offset of Rackham signature and some bleed-through of
Rackham signature to half-title page, darker illustrations have
offset tanned the facing pages (giving many pages a grubbier look),

brown mounts tanned (some foxing too to pages following mounts), many
tears (up to about two inches)
and adjacent creases to pages (mostly at bottom or top of the

rumpling and edge chips, five color plates with creases (a few creases
quite large, several plates with multiple corner creases), a couple

large crease and a smaller corner crease and a ripple/crease to the
other edge (as shown, with a note).
A complete but well-loved (worn) copy of the Large Format Signed US

and a crease/ripple along the right edge
(the creases and chips to color plates are readily seen in the photos).
Below: The rear
endpapers (front endpapers shown near the top).
Below: Another photo of
the spine which shows the splits/tears and fraying along the upper
