Original publisher's green cloth, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, covers stamped in blind, re-backed with original spine cloth laid down, pale brown clay-glazed free endpapers. Second Edition, second issue, with "Fifth Thousand" on title page. Rare Second issue of one of the most important scientific works of any century. The first edition of 1859 were sold out almost immediately (Now sells in six figures). This second edition, identified with "Fifth Thousand" on the title page, incorporated some corrections and changes by the author. Darwin worked through the book, making a number of changes, which included the addition of a third quotation to the verso of the half-title, the dilution of the whale-bear story (which never appeared again in any copyright edition after 1860), the halving of the estimated rate of erosion of the chalk beds of the Kentish Weald (this passage was then entirely omitted from the third edition). Freeman binding variant "a" with upright of "L" in London over right-hand upright of "H" in John and gap between lower triangle and gilt rule below it 1 mm. Freeman 376. CONDITION REPORT:  A rare book in the original contemporary publisher's cloth binding, professionally re-backed with original spine cloth laid down, ex-library with their rubberstamp on title page and several other locations (See Scans below), lacking folding diagram; professional extensive paper repairs (very well done) including to several long tears and many page edges (see the last 2 scans below), page v/vi bound before title page, page 223/224 bound in reverse order, endpapers replaced but original free endpapers retained (See Scans below), the pages with some age toning are clean & bright (See Scans below), the binding is tight & intact (See Scans below).
